Ministry of Unification, operation and abolition of social and cultural exchanges created during the Moon Jae-in administration

The Social and Cultural Exchange Operation Division under the Exchange and Cooperation Office of the Ministry of Unification will be abolished as of the 1st of next month .

According to Yonhap News, the Ministry of Unification announced on the 21st that ” in the second half of this year, according to the results of the evaluation of the new organization supervised by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Social and Cultural Exchange Operation Division will be abolished and will be integrated with the Social and Cultural Exchange Policy Division . ”

The Socio-Cultural Exchange and Operation Division was launched in February 2020 when the Office of Exchange and Cooperation was promoted to the Office of Exchange and Cooperation during the Moon Jae – in administration . It was newly established to prepare for full-scale inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation .

However , as inter-Korean exchanges were effectively cut off due to the prolonged strain on inter-Korean relations and the spread of the novel coronavirus infection ( COVID – 19) , the Ministry of Public Administration and Security received an evaluation that ” there was no clear result ” , and the abolition procedure was carried out after two years and seven months .

The previous day, the government deliberated and voted on the ‘ Ordinance for Partial Revision of the Organization of the Ministry of Unification and its affiliated institutions ‘ at a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Han Deok-soo at the government complex in Seoul the day before .

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Unification has been reviewing the issue of reorganization in the direction of reducing the Exchange and Cooperation Office to an Exchange and Cooperation Bureau and the India Cooperation Office expanding it to the India Cooperation Office .
